‘Guardians’
has been out for one week now and I hope it’s starting to find an audience. It
was written right at the end of the UK Covid lockdown. At the time it wasn’t
clear if larp - live action roleplay gaming – would be able to bounce back
after two years of suspended animation. ‘Guardians’ was my way of capturing an
excitement that seemed impossibly distant in a cold, grey, post-Covid world. I
need not have worried, the hobby has gone from strength to strength, with
almost overwhelming demand for places at events last year.
‘Guardians’ had to fit around the structure of an
Empire larp event, and that took a bit of doing. The idea was obviously to
appeal to Empire players and other larpers, but beyond that I wanted to show a
much wider audience – people who will probably never attend an event - how
spellbinding one of these weekends can be and do so in a way that was
entertaining and exciting. So, for the wider readership, it’s an adventure, a
fantasy adventure, and a story about two people whose lives are entwined and
changed for ever. Enjoy.
The publication process was painstaking and
careful, and while it was going on I used some of the extra energy ‘Guardians’
had brought me to write a sequel. The other great news this week was that the sequel
‘Pilgrims’ was handed over to the production team on Tuesday. Having
established the universe and its rules and characters, the format changes a
bit, and the adventure continues!
